Y'know, "fanning" used to be a new word to me too, and I'm not sure if it's used much outside the Dead-context - but it's easy enough to pick up - actually kind of useful to have names for different little guitar techniques! It's just fast strumming, basically. The Dead have attracted many sillier terms.
I assumed it comes from the rapid up&down of the picking hand, so it looked like Jerry was madly waving a fan over his strings....

Anyway, now that you mention it, the Tiger = fanning with wah-wah! Of course it also gains its potency since rather than just chording, Jerry might also be doing a series of fast pulloffs so the notes are all scrambled - while of course, the rest of the band is adding feedback noise & Phil bombs & such. I think the Sunshine Daydream film of Veneta '72 has a closeup of Jerry doing a Tiger.
(And I know I've seen the question, "what are people talking about with these Phil 'bombs'?" ....there was a thread on those too, a while back...)

Heh, yeah.. not like "fanning" is an end in and of itself. It's not all that difficult or technically demanding to strum the guitar that fast. Still a nice little piece of showmanship though. A nice way to build up into a crescendo.

Fanning to me is double edge sword..on the one hand it really
shows emotion when all is built up ans WHAM!!on the other hand...Fanning is also a way of "bailing"...no more ideas so lets just fan......i am not a huge fan on Fanning(no pun intended)..never was..
